Stopover in Lisbon: what to do and when to leave

Lisbon airport is close to the city, but one exit adds immigration, Metro, unevenness and a conservative return to the terminal. Baixa and Alfama form a compact exit; Avoid chaining viewpoints with a fair scale.

Calculate my scale

With less than 7 hours, stay in LIS. From 8–10 hours Baixa can fit if you can enter Portugal, the luggage continues to the destination and you reserve three hours to return. Complete Alfama is better with 11 hours or more.

Frequently asked questions

Before deciding

Can I leave Lisbon airport during a layover?

Yes, if you can enter Portugal, the luggage continues to its destination and you have enough time to return to the terminal, pass security and reach the gate.

How long does it take from LIS to Baixa?

The Metro requires a connection to many central areas. Estimate 30–45 minutes each way including immigration, platform and final walk.

What to do with a 9-hour layover in Lisbon?

Baixa and Praça do Comércio form a concentrated urban exit. If the return time is tight, lounge and rest in LIS are more prudent.
